How much does a weighbridge cost? What determines the price

The cost of a weighbridge depends on the project as a whole and cannot be reduced to the steel structure alone. Dimensions, capacity, installation type, steelwork treatment, civil works, electronics, software, any self-service operation, transport and installation all contribute to the final configuration.

For I Bilanciai, this is particularly important because every weighbridge is made to measure. The price of a truck weighbridge for an existing yard therefore does not come from selecting a fixed catalogue model, but from the characteristics defined according to the vehicles to be weighed and the organisation of the site.

Two companies that both ask for a weighbridge for articulated lorries may need very different installations. One may require an above-ground structure operated by staff; another may need floor-level installation, hot-dip galvanising, software for double weighing and a self-service station. Talking about the 'price of a weighbridge' without distinguishing these conditions means comparing supplies that may have little in common beyond the general function of weighing heavy vehicles.

Dimensions and capacity affect cost

Length, width, capacity and structural configuration must be defined according to the trucks, lorries or articulated vehicles that will use the installation.

Because I Bilanciai weighbridges are built to measure, it is not correct to attach a price automatically to descriptions such as 'truck weighbridge' or '60-tonne weighbridge'. Capacity is one of the project parameters and must be considered together with dimensions and intended use.

Varnished or hot-dip galvanised

I Bilanciai produces varnished and hot-dip galvanised weighbridges. The two versions perform the same weighing function but use different treatments to protect the steel structure.

In a particularly exposed yard, or where corrosion protection is a more important consideration, galvanising may become a significant part of the project. In other situations, a varnished structure can be entirely consistent with the expected operating conditions.

Pit-mounted or above-ground: the cost concerns the complete installation

A weighbridge can be installed floor-level or over-floor. The cost difference between the two solutions does not depend on the bridge alone.

Site preparation, foundations, any excavation, drainage, approaches and yard conditions all come into play. It is therefore not correct to say that a pit-mounted weighbridge always costs more than an above-ground one. Two complete projects for the same site must be compared.

Civil works can change the total considerably

The structure alone does not describe the cost of having an operational weighbridge.

Ground conditions, available levels, underground services, installation type and approach geometry may require different work. When comparing quotations, it is useful to separate the structure, civil works, transport, assembly, electronics and services.

A quotation that appears cheaper may simply exclude activities that are included in another offer.

Weight indicator and printer

The simplest configuration may include a weight indicator and, where required, a printer for the weighing ticket.

A company carrying out only a few weighings with an operator present has different requirements from a facility where dozens of trucks arrive and every operation must be associated with a vehicle, customer and material.

The cost of the electronics should therefore be assessed in relation to the process.

How much software affects the cost

I Bilanciai's Weighbridge software manages single and double weighings, storage of operations, customer, material and vehicle master data, totalisations, scale status, weighing tickets, reports and data export.

In a facility that uses the weighbridge to control goods entering and leaving systematically, data management becomes a substantial part of the installation.

The software does not change the principle used to measure weight, but it changes the way that data is used within the company.

Self-service and the cost of automation

I Bilanciai offers self-service solutions with POS and systems with a coin/token unit.

The POS station integrates a 7-inch touchscreen, thermal printer and card payment. The coin/token solution can use coins, tokens or RFID badges.

This equipment increases the value of the configuration compared with a traditional weighbridge, but it can also change the organisational cost of providing the service.

Transport, assembly and commissioning

The price of the structure at the manufacturer's facility does not necessarily match the cost of the complete installation ready for use in the customer's yard.

Distance, module dimensions, transport arrangements and access conditions affect the organisation of delivery. Assembly and commissioning must then be added.

When comparing quotations, it is therefore advisable to check explicitly what is included.

Metrology and legal use of weight data

When the weight data is used in areas subject to legal metrology, the configuration and related requirements must be considered from the purchasing stage.

I Bilanciai weighbridges can be configured for CE-M according to the project. A weighbridge used solely for internal checks and a scale used to determine quantities with commercial or legal relevance should not automatically be treated as metrologically equivalent.

Technical support and maintenance

A weighbridge is purchased with a long service horizon in mind. Availability of technical assistance, preventive maintenance and management of any problems are part of its real cost over time.

I Bilanciai provides technical assistance for weighing systems at the customer's premises or at its own facilities and offers remote support for the software.

Why two 18-metre weighbridges can have very different prices

'18-metre weighbridge' describes only one part of the installation. With the same length, capacity, treatment, installation type, civil works, indicator, printer, software, self-service, transport, installation and metrological configuration can all differ.

Asking the price of an 18-metre truck weighbridge can therefore be a useful starting point, but it is not enough to obtain a reliable comparison.

A useful quotation starts from the yard and the trucks

Where the site already exists, photographs and a site plan can be far more useful than a generic price request.

Knowing the installation point makes it possible to assess space, direction of vehicle movements, installation type and critical constraints. This information should be supplemented with vehicle type, length, maximum expected weight, frequency of use and weighing procedure.

Because I Bilanciai makes weighbridges to measure, providing accurate information turns a generic request into a more clearly defined technical and economic project.

Useful information when asking for a price

  • vehicle type;
  • maximum length;
  • maximum expected weight;
  • approximate number of weighings per day;
  • yard dimensions and conditions;
  • any installation constraints;
  • installation environment;
  • printing requirements;
  • first and second weighing;
  • software;
  • any self-service requirements.

Rental as an alternative to purchase

I Bilanciai also offers rental of modular electronic weighbridges, installable above ground or floor-level, with a weight indicator and printer; installation and removal are included in the service conditions.

Rental can be useful when the requirement is temporary, for example on a construction site or for a time-limited campaign.

What about used equipment?

A used weighbridge may have a lower initial price, but dimensions, capacity, condition of the steelwork, load cells, electronics, documentation, transport, civil works and reinstallation all have to be checked.

The correct comparison is not between the price of a used structure and that of a new installed weighbridge: both alternatives must be brought to the same operational result.

The right price is the price of the weighbridge actually needed

An oversized weighbridge may cost more than necessary; an undersized solution or one without essential functions may cost less to buy but create problems in daily operation.

By defining vehicles, capacity, yard, installation type, weighing procedure and data management first, the quotation can be built around the installation the company will actually use.

QUICK ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

There is no single figure because I Bilanciai weighbridges are made to measure. The price depends on dimensions, capacity, treatment, installation type, civil works, electronics, software, self-service, transport, installation and services.

Length alone does not determine the price. Two 18-metre weighbridges can differ in capacity, treatment, installation type, electronics, software and installation conditions.

Capacity is not enough to determine the cost. Length, yard, installation type and equipment must also be defined.

Not necessarily. The comparison must be based on the civil works and overall configuration for the same site.

The treatment affects the price, but equivalent installations must be compared.

Software is one of the components. The total also depends on the structure, electronics, installation type and services included.

It depends on the terminal and the required process. POS and coin/token stations are different configurations.

It depends on the offer. It is important to check explicitly which activities are included.

It depends mainly on how long the requirement will last. Purchase is normally assessed for a permanent installation; for temporary needs, rental can be a rational alternative.

No. The purchase price must be supplemented by the costs of inspection, dismantling, transport, civil works, reinstallation and any components that need replacing.
