Hot-dip galvanised or varnished weighbridge: which should you choose?
The difference between a hot-dip galvanised weighbridge and a varnished weighbridge concerns the protective treatment of the steel structure, not the principle used to detect the vehicle weight. In both cases, the weighbridge can be designed for trucks, articulated lorries and articulated vehicles and must be sized according to the yard, capacity and weighing process.
I Bilanciai produces both solutions and all its weighbridges are made to measure. The choice between galvanising and varnishing should therefore be considered within the same project used to define dimensions, installation type, capacity, traffic frequency and the site's environmental conditions.
Hot-dip galvanising is chosen when protection of the steelwork against corrosion carries particular weight in the assessment of the installation. Varnishing is also a protective treatment for the structure and can be entirely suitable for outdoor installations when operating conditions and the maintenance programme are consistent with this solution.
Reducing the comparison to the rule 'galvanised for outdoors, varnished for indoors' would therefore be wrong. A truck weighbridge normally operates outdoors in both configurations; what changes is the system used to protect the steel and how that choice relates to the installation environment.

What changes between hot-dip galvanising and varnishing
On a varnished weighbridge, the steelwork is protected by a coating system. On the hot-dip galvanised version, the structure is instead treated by galvanising, which is used to increase the steel's protection against weathering and corrosion.
From a weighing perspective, the two versions share the fundamental elements of the installation. I Bilanciai manufactures modular steel weighbridges that can be installed floor-level or over-floor, with a chequer-plate deck, IP68 load cells and CE-M configuration capability where required by the project.
For the user, therefore, the question is not which version 'weighs better'. Measurement quality depends on the weighing system, correct installation and metrological configuration. Galvanising and varnishing instead concern protection of the structure.
When hot-dip galvanising becomes particularly worthwhile
Hot-dip galvanising deserves particular consideration when the weighbridge must operate in conditions where exposure to the weather and the risk of corrosion are significant project factors.
This may apply to highly exposed yards, installations where the structure remains outdoors for long periods, or environments where humidity and operating conditions make it appropriate to give greater priority to steelwork protection.
This does not mean that the galvanised version is automatically the best choice in every context. The benefit of the treatment must be assessed together with cost, actual exposure and the way the installation will be managed over time.
Galvanising also does not replace proper yard design. Standing water, inadequate drainage, material build-up and neglected maintenance remain issues that must be addressed regardless of the surface treatment selected.
When a varnished weighbridge is the right choice
A varnished weighbridge should not be considered a version intended only for sheltered environments. I Bilanciai supplies it for vehicle weighing in outdoor installations as well, both floor-level and over-floor.
The choice can be appropriate when the site's environmental conditions do not make hot-dip galvanising a priority and when the structural maintenance programme is compatible with a varnished finish.
For many companies, the decisive point is not to establish in the abstract which treatment is 'better', but which is better suited to the weighbridge's real working life. An installation in a well-designed and properly maintained yard may have different requirements from a truck scale located in a much more aggressive environment.
Installation environment: the criterion that matters most
Before deciding between galvanised and varnished, it is useful to describe the environment in which the weighbridge will operate. Information on humidity, exposure to rain, materials handled, washing frequency, expected build-up and the general condition of the yard is useful.
If particular substances or chemical conditions are present, compatibility must be checked for the specific project. It is not correct to attribute universal resistance to every industrial environment to galvanising, just as it is not correct to rule out a varnished structure without analysing the context.
A weighbridge is an installation intended to remain in service for many years, so steelwork protection should be selected on the basis of actual exposure rather than a general rule.
Galvanised or varnished: does the installation type change?
No. Both versions can be designed for either floor-level or over-floor installation.
With floor-level installation, the weighbridge deck is aligned with yard level. With over-floor installation, the structure is raised and the vehicle reaches the platform via the approaches provided for in the project.
The choice of protective treatment and the choice of installation type are therefore separate decisions. A galvanised weighbridge can be pit-mounted or above-ground, just like a varnished one. The project must combine both variables according to space, civil works and the environment.
All I Bilanciai weighbridges are made to measure
Dimensions and capacity should not be treated as fixed characteristics associated solely with the galvanised/varnished choice.
I Bilanciai makes its weighbridges to measure. Length, capacity, installation type and configuration are defined according to the trucks to be weighed, the available yard and the company's process.
The steelwork treatment is part of this design together with the other elements. A weighbridge for articulated lorries used every day in a highly exposed environment may lead to a different choice from a truck scale with a different duty cycle and environmental conditions.
Structural maintenance
No treatment removes the need to monitor the condition of the weighbridge over time.
A varnished structure should be inspected for any damage to the coating and for conditions that may require intervention. A galvanised structure should also be inspected and maintained as part of the overall installation.
Maintenance also includes load cells, cabling, the weight indicator, site conditions, drainage and yard cleaning. For this reason, it is not correct to describe galvanising as a 'maintenance-free' solution.
How much the choice affects the price
The structural treatment affects the overall economic configuration of the installation, but the price of a weighbridge cannot be determined by looking at galvanising or varnishing alone.
Dimensions, capacity, installation type, civil works, electronics, software, any self-service equipment, transport and installation all contribute to the quotation. To compare a galvanised weighbridge correctly with a varnished one, all the other elements must therefore be kept equivalent.
When the yard already exists
If the weighbridge is to be installed in an operating facility, the treatment can be assessed together with the conditions already visible on site.
Photographs and a site plan help assess exposure, the presence of water, proximity to processing activities, truck routes and the position where the structure will be installed. This information should be supplemented with vehicle types, weighing frequency and the expected service life of the installation.

The right choice starts from the site
Galvanising and varnishing are two different ways of protecting the steel structure. The treatment matters, but it should not be separated from the rest of the project.
A truck weighbridge must be sized around the actual vehicles, fit correctly into the yard, have a capacity consistent with the expected loads and be configured for the company's weighing process.
All I Bilanciai weighbridges are made to measure, so the choice of steelwork protection should also contribute to creating the installation best suited to the site.
QUICK ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Is a hot-dip galvanised or varnished weighbridge better?
It depends on the environment in which the weighbridge will operate, the level of exposure and how it will be managed over time. Hot-dip galvanising provides specific protection of the steelwork against corrosion; varnishing is also a protective solution used on I Bilanciai weighbridges.
Does a galvanised truck weighbridge weigh more accurately than a varnished one?
No. The surface treatment concerns protection of the structure, not the measuring principle.
Is a galvanised weighbridge compulsory if the truck scale is outdoors?
No. The I Bilanciai varnished weighbridge is also intended for outdoor installation. The choice depends on environmental conditions and the project.
Does a galvanised weighbridge for lorries require no maintenance?
No. Galvanising does not make the entire installation maintenance-free.
Can I have a pit-mounted galvanised weighbridge for articulated lorries?
Yes. The galvanised version can be designed for either floor-level or over-floor installation.
Can I have an above-ground varnished weighbridge?
Yes. I Bilanciai varnished weighbridges can be built as over-floor installations and are sized to measure.
Do the dimensions change between galvanised and varnished versions?
I Bilanciai weighbridges are made to measure. Dimensions and capacity are defined by the project and do not automatically depend on the protective treatment.
How much more does hot-dip galvanising cost?
It is not correct to state a universal price difference without comparing two equivalent configurations.
Does galvanising protect against every chemical substance?
No. Where particular chemical conditions are present, compatibility must be checked for the specific case.
Can a varnished weighbridge last for many years?
Actual service life depends on the environment, use, maintenance and condition of the structure. It is not correct to assign a universal number of years.
