Weighbridge maintenance: checks, problems and technical assistance
Weighbridge maintenance involves much more than the structure crossed by trucks and articulated lorries. A heavy-vehicle scale works outdoors, withstands repeated loads and includes, in addition to the steelwork, load cells, cabling, a weight indicator and any software systems.
It is useful to distinguish the user's normal day-to-day attention from work that requires a technician. The operator may notice that the reading does not return correctly to zero, that it has become unstable, that material or water has accumulated, or that the platform shows visible damage. The operator should not, however, turn an observed anomaly into an improvised diagnosis or intervene on load cells, adjustments, seals or internal components.
Maintenance must also remain distinct from the periodic verification required for instruments used for legal metrology purposes. The two activities can intersect after certain repairs, but they have different purposes.
I Bilanciai carries out maintenance and repairs on weighing systems at the customer's premises or at its own facility and also provides remote support for the software.

Maintenance starts before a breakdown
When a truck weighbridge is central to goods entering or leaving a facility, waiting until it stops working completely is not an effective way to manage it.
An anomaly may first appear through less obvious signs: irregular return to zero, an unstable reading, messages on the weight indicator, material build-up or yard conditions that differ from normal.
Not all of these signs necessarily indicate a fault. It is useful to record them without immediately trying to determine which component is responsible.
A precise description of the observed behaviour is more useful to a technician than a diagnosis made by the user.
What the operator can check
A prudent check does not require opening components or making adjustments.
The weighbridge and surrounding area can be observed for obvious obstructions, accumulated material, water, visible damage or abnormal conditions. It is also useful to observe the weight indicator when the platform is empty and note any messages.
The boundary is important: the operator checks what can be seen without entering hazardous areas and without changing the instrument configuration.
When the weighbridge does not return to zero
Failure to return to zero is one of the easiest symptoms to notice.
Once the truck has completely left the platform, if the behaviour of the indicator changes noticeably or the reading no longer appears reliable, the problem should not be compensated for with improvised corrections.
It is useful to note when the anomaly appears, whether it happens every time, whether it started after a particular event and whether water, material or indicator messages are present.
The symptom alone does not identify the component responsible. When the weight appears unreliable, a technical assessment should be requested.
When the reading is unstable
A reading that varies abnormally deserves attention.
Before an intervention, it is useful to record the behaviour and visually check that there are no clearly abnormal conditions in the accessible area. If the problem persists, technical assistance should be able to assess the structure, sensing system and electronics.
Continuing to produce weighings whose reliability cannot be established can create operational and commercial problems more serious than the time required for a technical check.
Material build-up
Soil, gravel, dust, process residues and other materials can reach the platform area.
Visible material does not automatically mean that the weighbridge is measuring incorrectly, but it is a condition that should be managed according to the instructions for the installation.
A weighbridge crossed by many articulated lorries in a dusty environment may require checks organised differently from a scale used only a few times a day in a clean yard.
Water and drainage
I Bilanciai weighbridges use IP68 load cells, but component protection does not remove the need to manage the complete installation and the yard correctly.
Where standing water or conditions different from normal are observed, the situation should be assessed, especially if weighing anomalies appear at the same time.
Water management also varies with installation type. A floor-level weighbridge and an over-floor weighbridge interact with the yard differently and should be designed with drainage and accessibility in mind.
Visible structural damage
Impacts or other events may cause visible damage to the steelwork.
Where there are deformations, displaced parts or other obvious changes, it is not appropriate to decide by sight that the issue is merely cosmetic. A weighbridge is a structure used by heavy vehicles and the damage should be assessed technically.
The same caution applies to both galvanised and varnished structures.
After an exceptional event
Severe environmental conditions, exceptional water ingress, obvious impacts or other events directly affecting the weighbridge justify a prudent visual check before normal operation resumes.
If unstable readings, failure to return to zero, damage or other abnormal signs appear, technical assistance should be requested.
How often maintenance should be carried out
There is no single maintenance interval that applies to every truck weighbridge.
Frequency depends on operating conditions, environment, number of weighings, vehicle type and the requirements of the installation.
I Bilanciai offers preventive maintenance, inspection and calibration services, with Standard and Customised assistance contracts.
The schedule should therefore be built around the duty cycle rather than an abstract rule applied equally to every scale.
Preventive maintenance and the cost of downtime
At some facilities, a few hours of downtime can be managed; at others, every truck must pass through a single weighing point and an unavailable weighbridge can slow deliveries, loading and dispatch operations.
In these cases, the value of preventive maintenance also depends on the operational cost of downtime.
Structure, load cells and electronics
A weighbridge consists of several elements. The structure must continue to provide the required conditions for vehicle transit, the sensing system must produce the correct data, and the indicator, cabling and electronics must operate as intended.
Where software is present, an IT component is added and may require a different type of support from the work needed in the yard.
I Bilanciai carries out repairs on site or at its own facility and provides remote software assistance.
When to stop using the weighbridge and call technical assistance
The main criterion is the reliability of the data and the safety of the observed conditions.
Clearly unstable readings, failure to return to zero, visible damage or significant abnormal conditions require assessment before normal use continues.
For instruments used for legal metrology purposes, the holder must also ensure correct operation and must not use instruments that are clearly defective or metrologically unreliable.
What to tell technical assistance
It is useful to state when the anomaly first appeared, whether it is continuous or intermittent, what the indicator displays, how zero behaves and whether any particular event occurred beforehand.
Photographs of visible conditions can help, provided they are taken without removing guards or entering unsafe areas.
For a software issue, useful information includes displayed messages, the operation being performed and the conditions in which the error recurs.
WANT TO KNOW HOW MUCH YOUR WEIGHBRIDGE WILL COST?
Describe the vehicles, yard and intended use: the I Bilanciai team can identify the configuration that should be assessed in more detail.
Maintenance should also be considered when designing a new weighbridge
When a new weighbridge is designed for an existing facility, it is useful to consider not only space, length, capacity and installation type, but also how the installation will be inspected and maintained over the years.
All I Bilanciai weighbridges are made to measure. The project can therefore also take into account accessibility, environmental conditions and future service requirements.
Maintenance and periodic verification are not the same activity
Maintenance is intended to preserve or restore system operation. Periodic verification, by contrast, is the metrological control required for measuring instruments used for legal metrology purposes and is governed by D.M. 93/2017.
Maintenance does not automatically renew periodic verification; passing periodic verification does not make maintenance unnecessary until the next deadline.
After a repair involving seals
For instruments used for legal metrology purposes, when a repair involves removal of labels or other seals, including electronic seals, D.M. 93/2017 requires a new periodic verification to be requested within ten working days of the repair.
It is therefore not correct to state generically that any repair invalidates the verification: what was actually done must be established.
Calibration, maintenance and periodic verification
The terms should not be used as synonyms.
Repair corrects a fault; preventive maintenance seeks to preserve operating conditions; calibration concerns a metrological assessment; periodic verification is a legal-metrology control governed by D.M. 93/2017.
Using the correct terms also helps ensure that the correct service is requested.
How much maintenance costs
There is no single price because a preventive check, a mechanical repair, an electronics intervention and a software problem are different activities.
Cost is affected by the type of anomaly, installation configuration, components involved, location and the work required to restore operation.
At many facilities, it is useful to compare the cost of the intervention with the cost of weighbridge downtime as well.
Signs to watch for
| Situation | Prudent response |
|---|---|
| Weighbridge does not return to zero | Record the behaviour and request an assessment if the data is unreliable |
| Unstable weight reading | Record conditions and messages without inferring the cause |
| Material build-up | Manage the condition without intervening on components |
| Abnormal water presence | Observe the situation and check for any weighing anomalies |
| Structural damage | Request a technical assessment |
| Indicator error | Record the exact message |
| Software problem | Document the operation and error; consider remote assistance |
| Repair involving seal removal | Check the applicable metrological requirements |
A reliable weighbridge is managed between weighings too
Maintenance is not about constantly looking for a fault or replacing the technician. It is about knowing the installation's normal behaviour, noticing when it changes and organising technical assistance in proportion to the work the weighbridge performs.
For a scale crossed every day by trucks, articulated lorries and articulated vehicles, this approach protects not only the structure and load cells, but also the reliability of the operations that depend on the weight data.
QUICK ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Why does the weighbridge not return to zero?
The symptom can have different causes. It is useful to inspect the area visually, record the behaviour and request technical assistance when the data is not reliable, avoiding improvised adjustments.
Why is the truck scale reading unstable?
An unstable reading must be assessed on the specific installation. If the data cannot be considered reliable, the weighbridge should not continue to be used normally.
How often should maintenance be carried out?
There is no universal interval. It depends on use, number of vehicle movements, environment and installation characteristics.
Do IP68 load cells require no maintenance?
The protection rating of the load cells does not make the entire system maintenance-free.
Can I adjust a weighbridge myself if it is reading incorrectly?
It is not advisable. Adjustments, load cells and components should be handled by competent technical personnel.
Does maintenance replace periodic verification?
No. They are different activities.
Do I need a new periodic verification after a repair?
When a repair involves removal of the seals specified by the regulations, a new periodic verification must be requested within the applicable time limit. Not every repair automatically has the same effect.
Does I Bilanciai provide on-site technical assistance?
Yes. I Bilanciai carries out repairs at the customer's premises or at its own facility.
Is software support available?
Yes. I Bilanciai provides remote support for the weighing software via an Internet connection.
How much does it cost to repair a truck weighbridge?
It depends on the problem and the components involved. The symptom and installation configuration must first be identified.
