Weighbridge or axle weighing platform: differences in vehicle weighing

Weighbridges and axle weighing platforms are both used to weigh heavy vehicles, but they provide different information and should be selected according to the process the company needs to control. A weighbridge measures the vehicle statically when it is fully supported on the platform; an axle weighing platform instead measures the load on individual axles dynamically as the vehicle passes over it and calculates the total by adding the readings.

The distinction matters because a truck's total weight and the distribution of load across its axles are not the same information. A company that needs to manage gross, tare and net weights on entry and exit has different requirements from one that needs to know how the load is distributed across the vehicle's axles.

I Bilanciai produces both solutions. All I Bilanciai weighbridges are designed and made to measure, while the I Bilanciai axle weighing platform measures 3 × 1 m, has a maximum capacity of 20,000 kg, is installed floor-level and is supplied with a weight indicator; the thermal printer is optional.

What a weighbridge measures

In static weighing, the truck drives fully onto the platform and remains stationary during the measurement. The resulting value therefore relates to the vehicle as a whole.

This method is particularly suitable for processes where the total vehicle weight has to be determined or two readings of the same truck have to be compared. The classic example is double weighing: the vehicle is weighed before and after loading or unloading, and the difference determines the net quantity moved.

For this process to work correctly, the usable length of the weighbridge must accommodate the entire vehicle. This is one of the reasons why I Bilanciai makes its weighbridges to measure, defining dimensions and capacity around the trucks that will use the installation.

I Bilanciai weighbridges are made to measure

When discussing a weighbridge for trucks, articulated lorries or articulated vehicles, it makes no sense to assume that there is one mandatory length.

Vehicles differ, yards differ and capacity requirements differ too. The project must therefore take into account the most demanding vehicle, the geometry of the area, the installation type and the operating flow.

Made-to-measure production allows the weighbridge to be sized for the actual site instead of forcing the customer to adapt the yard to a preset dimension.

How the axle weighing platform works

The I Bilanciai axle weighing platform is installed floor-level and operates dynamically. The vehicle passes over the platform and the system measures the individual axles; the total weight is calculated by adding the readings.

The platform measures 3 × 1 m, has a maximum capacity of 20,000 kg and is supplied with a weight indicator. The thermal printer is optional.

The 20,000 kg capacity refers to the platform and should not be interpreted as a limit that automatically applies to the vehicle's total weight. Any use of the data in legal or regulated contexts must be assessed for the specific application.

Total weight and load distribution are different information

A weighbridge primarily answers the question: what is the total weight of this vehicle in its current condition?

An axle weighing platform provides different information: how is the load distributed across the individual axles as the vehicle passes over it?

Knowing the individual axle weights does not automatically replace a company process based on gross, tare and net values obtained through static weighings. The two systems should therefore not be compared simply on the basis of footprint or price.

An axle weighing platform is not a smaller truck weighbridge

The smaller dimensions of an axle weighing platform can make it look like a smaller weighbridge. That interpretation is incorrect.

Axle weighing uses a dynamic method and produces the data as the axles pass over the platform in sequence. A weighbridge, by contrast, measures the vehicle statically while it is fully supported on the structure.

The choice must start from the data required and the process in which that data will be used.

When a weighbridge is more suitable

A weighbridge is normally the solution to consider when a company needs to manage the total weight of vehicles and operations such as first and second weighing.

It is particularly well suited to receiving and dispatch processes where the weight must be associated with a customer, material and vehicle and can subsequently be managed through software, tickets and reports.

When an axle weighing platform becomes more relevant

An axle weighing platform becomes relevant when the required data concerns the individual axles and their load distribution.

The vehicle passes over the platform and the system provides the readings for the different axles together with the calculated total. Any use of the result for legal or regulated purposes must be assessed separately.

The role of the yard

A weighbridge requires the vehicle to be able to reach the platform, position itself fully on it and leave the area. Floor-level or over-floor installation also changes the relationship between the structure and the site's traffic layout.

An axle weighing platform occupies a smaller surface area, but it still requires a route that allows the vehicle to pass over the platform correctly.

If the yard already exists, the site plan, articulated-vehicle trajectories, access routes and manoeuvring space make it possible to assess which solution is genuinely compatible with the site.

Two practical examples

An articulated lorry arrives at a facility with a delivery, is weighed on entry, unloads the material and returns to the scale before leaving. In this case the company needs to link two weighings of the same vehicle to determine the net weight: a weighbridge is consistent with the process.

In another context, the requirement is to understand how the weight is distributed across the different axles as the vehicle passes. Here, the axle weighing platform provides the specific information required.

The two requirements can also coexist at the same site.

Which system should you choose?

If the process is centred on the truck's total weight, double weighing and net-weight calculation, a weighbridge provides the more natural structure. If the requirement is to know the load on the individual axles while the vehicle is moving, the axle weighing platform addresses a different problem.

Once the required data is clear, the yard, vehicles, capacity and method of use come into play. For a weighbridge, I Bilanciai designs and manufactures the structure to measure; for axle weighing, the 3 × 1 m platform has to be assessed within the vehicle's actual route.

QUICK ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

A weighbridge measures the entire vehicle statically when it is fully positioned on the platform. The I Bilanciai axle weighing platform dynamically measures each axle as it passes and calculates the total by adding the readings.

If the static total weight of the articulated lorry is required and gross, tare and net have to be managed, a weighbridge is the reference solution.

The system calculates the total by adding the individual axle readings. However, that value should not automatically be considered equivalent, for every purpose, to a static weighing on a weighbridge.

It measures 3 × 1 m, has a maximum capacity of 20,000 kg, is installed floor-level and is supplied with a weight indicator. The thermal printer is optional.

Yes, when the process requires both the static total weight and information on axle-load distribution.

Yes. All I Bilanciai weighbridges are made to measure and the length is defined according to the vehicles and the yard.

No. Space is one of the criteria, but the primary choice should depend on the data that is actually required.
